When we first started out
All I could see was beautiful
The chance for something wonderful
A possibility for perfection

But now the more I look
The more I can see the flaws
All the little things
That annoy me about you

They were probably there
Right from the beginning
But I was too close
I couldn't see right in front of me

I was so close to you
The flaws right before my eyes
Blurred and blended
Until all I could see was the perfection

But now that I've looked back
Taken a step away
And seen what was really there
Suddenly I see

I'm not the kind to walk away
I'd rather work to improve
Eliminate the flaws if possible
Or learn to deal if not

But you were never willing to try
And that was the worst flaw of all
And the only one I can't ignore
Since it completely marred my image of you

Author's Comments

This was actually written after a long day spent working on my poster for history class. I spent a long time drawing a central picture and arranging everything, and I thought it didn't look that good. Then my mom came into my room and said it looked really great, and when I didn't believe her she told me to take a couple steps back and look agian. So this poem was actually kind of written about that project, but it applies quite easily to relationships as well.

Well... it's a good poem. I understand what you mean. But I don't agree with the idea. A quote from the movie Hellboy describes the way I see things very well.
It goes something like "You like someone for their qualities, but you love them for their flaws."
No one is perfect.

...we'll live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl, I dont know when, were gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go, and well walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us, baby we were born to run...

Well, the idea I was going for is that when you first start out with someone you have this idealized view of them. Everything they do and say seems perfect, romantic, etc. But the closer you get to them, the more you start to notice the little things that could bug you about them.

I agree with you, it's the flaws that make people who they are. Although everyone has that one thing that bugs their partner, as I saw in this magazine quiz once: "You feel like you're going to scream if they make "that sound" again during the long road trip". It's inevitable. But i think that if you really love somebody, the flaws don't annoy you because it's a part of what makes them the person you love.
:iconvetch:
Sort of, yes. I'm a bit odd, and don't do things quite normally as far as relationships are concerned, so perhaps I don't understand that idealized thing. In theory, though, I get it.
It is the flaws that make us, yes.

I don't do the idealized thing either. I think it's pointless to put someone up on a pedestal only to be shocked later when they can't live up to your expectations. It's just setting yourself up to be disappointed.
:iconvetch:
It is, yes. Things just kind of worked out in such a way that my loved one and I didn't really go through that. I think that's probably good, though, albeit different.

It's probably better that you didn't go through it. It's a pretty pointless process that only gets people all upset.
:iconvetch:
Indeed.

Relationships are weird like that. It's probably going to be the topic of my article for the school paper.
:iconvetch:
Ah, that would be interesting. Good luck.
