Good News!

Sun Nov 5, 2006, 8:09 PM
I've just been informed that the article I wrote for my school newspaper has made the front page. I got an e-mail earlier from the editors. It was a general e-mail to everyone who submitted that not all articles would be able to be put in this edition. Also, they said that many writers should come to writing workshops to improve before their works are published. They also told us that many of the articles had to be edited radically, and extensively worked on to improved. Then they informed us that if we wanted to know the status of our article, we should e-mail them back.

So, figuring my article would either have been scrapped since I basically spit it out at 11:00 one night after finishing several major assignements, or it would have been altered significantly, I decided I may as well see how it's doing. So I sent them a message and got the following response:

"The "Where is the Love" article turned out quite well. After the
editing, it was a very interesting read. I really enjoyed how you managed to organize many different themes that tied to your thesis rather than create a 1000-word rant with no real constructive argumentation. In fact, I liked it so much that it is on page 1 and continues on page 4. In case your expertise with high school relationships supersedes your mathematical wherewithal, that means that it is front page news! In any case, please do come out to our next writers meeting and workshop (probably in a week's time) because we would love to have you on as a dedicated writer all year."

That was way better than I expected! I was fully gearing myself up to have been shafted completely, or face significant changes. I e-mailed them out of curiosity afte rthat, to see what they had edited, and they sent me a copy of how it would appear. They had only changed some grammar issues and a little bit of the phrasing. But essentially, it was exactly as I had written it. Not bad for my first ever newspaper article.
